Holistic Aromatherapy for Cats

Most any cat owner will tell you their feline friends are capable of conveying emotion. In fact, they may even say they can recognize and distinguish specific emotions their cats display, including love, anger, illness, annoyance and more.

Scientific experiments on both humans and animals indicate that emotional responses are triggered by physical stimuli. Considering that cats have sensory systems that are much more sensitive than the human senses of sight, smell, sound, taste and touch, there's no question that our pets' environments are so closely linked to their states of mind.

Unlike humans, cats do not have the conscious ability to integrate, process and grow from their emotional experiences. Instead, cats will react, take in and indicate their emotions, but are not able to process their imbalances like we can.

This explains why a healthy emotional environment is vital for cats, as well as for all animals. A healthy cat must be afforded enough space, love, and attention if he is to thrive. But foremost, and frequently overlooked, is a peaceful home environment. Cats are extremely sensitive to stress, and living in a home with arguments, negative energies or tension will affect his emotional well-being and health.

Today I will share aromatherapy recipes to treat common emotional issues your cat may be facing, including stress, loneliness, grief and separation anxiety/abandonment.
Animals respond very well to flower essences and essential oils. They are very gentle and safe methods of treating emotional imbalances or stress-related symptoms. But please remember that animals are very sensitive and only require a minute dosage of essential oils. Avoid any sensitive areas, such as the head, eyes, ears and mouth. Pour a few drops of these aromatic blends into the palm of your hands and very gently pat your cat along the spine.

Prepare these aromatic blends by pouring the essential oils into a 10ml bottle, then adding an organic vegetable oil to fill.

Nature's Aromatherapy Cupboard

Six common Essential Oils in the Healing Cupboard of Aromatherapy

The Art of Aromatherapy works with the Olfactory System - the sense of smell, and the Integumentary System - the skin, and is an excellent means of providing a natural alternative to ease many common conditions. All of the herbs we are discussing here, are common and found in most kitchens used for additional flavoring in your favorite recipes.

However, the pure essential oils of these herbs are used quite differently in Aromatherapy. A plants scent is produced by its special oils called essential oils. The essential oils are usually added to a carrier oil, When you practice aromatherapy, the only oils that should be used are all natural and 100% pure essential oils extracted from plants that have not been treated with chemical pesticides. We would like to advise you however, to please consult your health care professional for any questions or concerns with your health.

The first herb's essential oil is Sweet Bay, and has a lively spicy scent. Sweet Bay is used in Aromatherapy to relax tight muscles, soothe sprains, lessen pain, to calm, promote restful sleep, improve digestion, improve mental clarity and memory, as a disinfectant, repels insects and the vapors help breathing.

Clove is our next herb's essential oil. It has a hot and spicy scent and is used to warm the body, relieve pain, lifts the mood, helps relieve fatigue, serves as a aphrodisiac, vapors help breathing, is a disinfectant and repels insects.

Fennel is our third herb's essential oil and it has a strong licorice scent and is used for warming the body, relieves pain; it contains estrogen-like hormones, stimulates lactation in nursing mothers, helps to reduce cellulite deposits, has a purifying effect on the body and repels insects.

Ginger is our forth herb's essential oil and has a spicy scent. It is used for warming the body, relaxing tight muscles, relieving pain, lifts the mood, and helps relieve fatigue, energizing and increases appetite.

Lemon is not an herb but is a common fruit and has a variety of uses in Aromatherapy. It is used to cool the body, depending on the amount used it can balance, calm or energize. Lemon lifts the mood, is refreshing, improves mental clarity and memory, helps reduce cellulite deposits, has a purifying effect on the body, stops bleeding from minor injuries, serves as a disinfectant and soothes insect bites.

Our last herb's essential oil is Sage which has a spicy scent and is used to lessen pain, reduce lactation in nursing mothers, reduces perspiration, has a purifying effect on the body and serves as a disinfectant.

Most often these pure essential oils are combined according to an Aromatherapy formula and used in room sprays, lotions and massage oils for ease of use.

Often a drop or two of the pure essential oil can be added to a bath, which is especially good for any of the herbs that aid in relaxation.

If you have an interest in the use of Aromatherapy please contact a Certified Aromatherapist or consider purchasing pre-made products for the purpose you wish to use it for.

Addison's disease MISCONCEPTIONSCharles Douglas Wehner

Addison's disease affects about one person in TWENTY MILLION. In the United States there would be about ten to twelve cases, with similar numbers in Europe.

A quick check on the search engines at the time of writing reveals 14,440 websites on MSN and 83,800 on Google. All deal with the subject of this rare disease.

Does EACH patient in the States need between 1,444 and 8,380 pages of information to help him?

And is the information GOOD?

A quick check of the first entry on the Google list delivered the NIDDK page which has no AUTHOR NAME.

There were plenty of pronouncements about what the anonymous author believed the facts to be, but ABSOLUTELY NO ACADEMIC REFERENCES. The page ended with suggested reading, which left the most important author out - Thomas Addison himself.

The Internet is a rumour-mill, with one person of dubious accuracy taking the word of an anonymous publisher and on the strength of that, publishing again.

This is a very dangerous situation in the world of medicine.

The popularity of Addison's disease has never been higher. It was announced in the press that John F. Kennedy had the condition, and suddenly everybody has the "I AM JFK" mentality. Similarly, Elvis Presley became addicted to steroids, so many people have the "I AM ELVIS" death-wish.

True Addison's disease is HORRIBLE. Those who have it want to be free of it - but it has never been cured.

When bad doctors declare people to have this condition, the true sufferers are outnumbered by phoneys - the true condition is RARE, RARE, RARE!

So when each person who IMAGINES that he has got it writes a page on the Web, the truth becomes totally buried.

THE ONLY THING TO DO IS TO REPUBLISH ADDISON.

That is what I did. Dr. Thomas Addison discovered the condition. If you don't believe him, who will you believe?

When following the links, please click 'BACK' to return to this article.

MISCONCEPTION 1. BLACK SKIN

Thomas Addison first noticed the anemia of two patients who died and two more who walked away from the hospital. The dead patients had damaged "suprarenal capsules". He assumed that the two who left must have had these too.

A report - not in Addison's words - appeared (http://wehner.org/addison/first ), in which he made NO MENTION of dark skin. HE HAD NOT NOTICED.

Just over five years later he published a book (http://wehner.org/addison ), in which he mentioned the pigmentation of the skin. You can see his signature at http://www.wehner.org/addison/x0.htm .

It was James Wootten (http://wehner.org/addison/images/wootten.jpg ) who was first seen to have a SUBTLE discoloration of skin, followed by James Jackson (http://wehner.org/addison/images/jackson.jpg ), Henry Patten (http://wehner.org/addison/images/patten.jpg ) and John Iveson (http://wehner.org/addison/images/iveson.jpg ).

NONE of these patients was in any way discoloured so as to draw attention to themselves in a crowd. Nor was any of them emaciated or otherwise sick-looking.

This is a collection of healthy, good-looking corpses!

It is true that Louis Martineau published a black image of the patient Gaget (http://wehner.org/addison/images/gaget.jpg ), but this appears to be because he could not afford proper colours. The text of the Martineau thesis emphasises that the hair was blond, turning to chestnut and that the eyes were blue - unlike the picture.

MISCONCEPTION 2. ADDISON CRISIS

There is NO SUCH THING as an "Addison Crisis". That is to say, even an expert does not know what it is.

The author nearly died of untreated Addison's disease several times. At no time did some phenomenon take place that would draw attention.

A doctor said to the author "If you had SEEN an Addison Crisis"... SEEN? The author felt it on his own body! A steroid addict may panic, and become hysterical before his energy disappears and he goes from paranoia to coma, but true Addison sufferers simply fade away.

In the Greenhow table of 128 uncomplicated cases, Case 55 and 56 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table15.htm?sink ), Case 107 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table33.htm?sink ), Case 147 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table48.htm?sink ), Case 167 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table55.htm?sink ), Case 169 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table56.htm?sink ) and
173 (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table57.htm?sink ) all were described as dying from "SINKING". Other cases describe the same thing in different words.

The impression that bad doctors seem to have is that the patient "collapses unconscious". This never happens. A blood-clot usually seals the patient's fate. According to Greenhow "In every case in which I have witnessed the post-mortem examination, firm, discoloured fibrinous clots were found in the right cavities of the heart" (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/p62.htm?fibrinous ).

SO IF YOU WAIT FOR AN ADDISON SUFFERER TO COLLAPSE, IT WILL BE TOO LATE.

Again, Addison speaks of a "Semi-comatose state" in his previous work, and now speaks of a "torpid" state (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/p17.htm?roused ) from which the patient can be roused. This does not disagree with Greenhow's assertion that there is NO coma in Addison's disease, and that often the consciousness is perfect to the last (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/p17.htm?roused , http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table35.htm?consciousness and http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/table47.htm?consciousness for example).

YOU ARE DAZED, AND JUST TOO TIRED TO SPEAK, BUT YOU ARE AWAKE.

So there is no "Addison crisis" to see.

MISCONCEPTION 3. SALT CRAVING

The Internet is full of stories of people craving salt, by which the condition is said to have been discovered. However, the full documented literature from my website at http://wehner.org/addison.htm shows that there NEVER was any salt craving until steroids arrived on the market in the ninteen-fifties.

Aldosterone drives the salt-digestion.

No aldosterone, no salt hunger.

When aldosterone, or a substitute (FluDROcortisone, known as Florinef) is taken, the body absorbs salt from wherever it can. When it can no longer do so, you crave salt.

Mac E Hadley, in "Endocrinology", 3rd Edition, Prentice-Hall, describes how aldosterone causes sodium to be recovered from the renal tubules, from the gut and from the skin.

SO THOSE WHO CLAIM THAT THEIR ADDISON'S DISEASE BEGAN WITH SALT-CRAVING ARE ACTUALLY THE VICTIMS OF FLORINEF POISONING.

Mistaking FluDROcortisone for a glucocorticoid FlUOROcortisone is a typical cause.

Addison-dog owners may like to put food WITHOUT salt in the bowl of their pet, with a SEPARATE plate of salt beside it. When medicated with Florinef, the dog will take the salt that it needs.

Incidentally, another tip from Greenhow is to use SODA-WATER (fizzy water) as medication. When effervescent water is given to an Addison patient - man or dog - it protects the duodenum from ulcers caused by the sodium loss.

MISCONCEPTION 4. AUTOIMMUNE

The story is put about that Addison sufferers have an AUTOIMMUNE condition. Evidence is often brought in the form of "ATROPHY" of the Adrenal glands.

However, there is a distinction between ATROPHY and APLASIA. The former is just SHRINKAGE (like an emaciated person developing wrinkles - and then fattening up when fed). There is no DAMAGE in atrophy.

Aplasia is the condition that WOULD be found in an autoimmune condition - and this never happens. Autoimmunity means that ANTIBODIES appear that EAT AWAY the glandular tissue, so that it is GONE. Aplasia means WITHOUT TISSUE.

This happens in DOGS - but was never reported in man.

The only way that tissue has ever disappeared from the adrenal glands has been by means of GERMS.

GERMS have the power to adapt to a hostile environment like the adrenals. The high steroid concentrations however, will exclude most types of germ. It has to be tuberculosis, or in AIDS the Cytomegalovirus, or the even rarer Histoplasmosis fungus.

A specialised germ that manages to invade ONE adrenal will be able to invade THE OTHER. Cancer cannot do this (http://wehner.org/cgi-bin/mark.pl/addison/greenhow/p50.htm?cancer ).

BOTH glands must be destroyed for symptoms to appear, because each acts as a reserve gland for the other.

So the vast throngs of Addison sufferers in their self-help groups, and the vast numbers of "experts" who have seen the condition a "thousand times" are plain WRONG.

We must RETURN to Addison and his CO-WORKERS. We must RE-READ the ESTABLISHED LITERATURE, with all its academic links to the Lancet, British Medical Journal, Canstatt's Jahresbericht, Gazette des Hopitaux and others.

Not a single case of steroid addiction clouds the story, and there is not a single case that resembles the auto-immune condition.

All cases in the 19th century were TUBERCULOSIS.

What went wrong? They lost the skill do diagnose.

Regain that skill at http://wehner.org/addison.htm
Collect the books to your own computer from http://wehner.org/wehner.zip (takes just over 8 megabytes).

This is a FREE SERVICE - to set the record straight. You can compare the Wehner retypes with the originals in the British and Wellcome library, or possibly in the Library of Congress.

White pages are EXACTLY as the originals.

Aromatherapy for the Parents of Teenagers

If you are the parent of a teen, you are certainly aware of how much your family dynamics have changed in recent years. It doesn't seem all that long ago that you were the center of your children's universe. Remember when you were the one they came to when they had bruised shins and broken hearts? Well your once-little baby is now approaching adulthood, testing his or her independence, and at times your patience.

Aromatherapy for Animals, Part 1: Healing Blends for Dogs

The trend toward natural health consciousness in humans is gaining popularity in the animal world too. Many veterinarians are beginning to introduce natural therapies in their practice, including osteopathy, homeopathy, acupuncture, flower essences and more recently aromatherapy. It's just been a few years since aromatherapists and vets have begun to recognize how animals can benefit from this wonderful natural therapy.

For humans and animals alike, essential oils are powerfully antiseptic, detoxifying and revitalizing, thus increasing resistance to disease while strengthening the immune system. Essential oils can also be used to control pet odors and to purify the air from dust, dander and allergens. For example, mix 50 drops of lemon essential oil in a 2-oz spray bottle filled with water. Shake very well several times and spray the room. You'll notice immediately that it refreshes and cleanses the air!

But aromatherapy offers more than just fragrance. Their remarkable actions upon animals -- most notably dogs, cats and horses -- are immediate, profound and long-lasting, positively affecting their overall health and emotional well-being.

Today we will focus on recipes and tips for Fido. As faithful friends, dogs bring affection, pure joy and loyalty into our lives. Most breeds thrive in the outdoors, running and playing in the freedom of nature. In fact, dogs will naturally purge their system in the wilderness, carefully choosing specific plants their systems need, such as blackberries, raw carrots, etc. Now a domestic animal, most dogs have lost this natural instinct, and are becoming less resistant to illness in general.

Dogs have a predictable set of physical ailments that may occur during their life span. Today I'll share aromatherapy blends that will soothe and heal skin problems, remove and prevent fleas and ticks, relieve the pain of rheumatism and arthritis, revive energy and control pet odor.

********
Blend to Relieve Skin Problems
********
Pour the following essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and fill with Calendula oil. Apply to afflicted area.

-5 drops Lavender
-6 drops Geranium

********
Blend to Relieve Itching
********
Pour the following essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and fill with Calendula oil. Apply to afflicted area.

-4 drops Lavender
-5 drops Geranium
-3 drops Roman Chamomile

********
Blend to Combat Fleas
********
Fleas are nuisances for man and animal alike. This sinister pest hides within your pets' fur as well as in our carpets, parquet and window coverings.

Prepare the following blend by pouring the following ingredients into a 1-oz spray bottle:

-7.5 ml Mint essential oil
-22.5 ml rubbing alcohol

Fleas absolutely dislike mint! Spray the affected areas of your home. Don't forget your dog's bed. Spray directly onto your dog, holding the bottle about 10 inches from him. Avoid spraying on the head and eyes.

********
Blend to Combat Ticks
********
Check your home and pet for ticks - look in his bed, window coverings, walls, etc. Burn the ones you find to prevent them from coming back.

Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill.

-10 drops Tea Tree
-10 drops Lavender

Apply 1 drop of Lavender and 1 drop of Tea Tree undiluted essential oils before extracting ticks from your pet. This will disinfect the inflamed area. It may sting a little bit (as alcohol would) but it works great!

********
Blend to Ease Rheumatism
********
Like humans, many dogs suffer from rheumatism as they age. Your veterinarian may treat him with specific medications or natural therapies. But locally, you can apply and massage the following blend in the morning and night to alleviate pain.

Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill.

-8 drops Birch
-8 drops Juniper
-7 drops Rosemary

********
Blend to Ease Arthritis
********
As recommended by some veterinarians, soften your dog's bed to make it very cozy and warm. If your dog is an "outside" pet, allow him to sleep inside. A little moist heat, applied directly over painful joints, can be a great comfort to arthritic pets. Get him a warm sweater, or apply a moist heating pad. And massage the area twice a day with the following blend to soothe the pain away.

Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill.

-12 drops Birch
-8 drops Juniper
-7 drops Rosemary

********
Blend to Boost His Energy
********
Prepare the following blend by pouring the essential oils into a 10-ml bottle and adding organic vegetable oil to fill. Massage the spine gently. Use in the mornings only.

-5 drops Rosemary
-6 drops Lavender
-2 drops Peppermint

********
Blend to Control Pet Odor
********
Try this natural and aromatic spray. Pour the essential oils into a 1-oz spray bottle filled with water. Shake very vigorously several times before each use. Spray directly onto your dog, holding the bottle about 10 inches from him. Avoid spraying on the head and eyes.

-10 drops Lavender
-10 drops Geranium
-6 drops Lemon
